Crohns Disease Life Insurance

How it works:

Some things that will be considered by underwriters when applying for Crohns Disease Life Insurance:

  • When you were diagnosed
  • Medication you take
  • Any treatment / surgery you have received or are awaiting
  • How long ago your last attack was
  • The frequency of your symptoms
  • The severity of your symptoms

The Insurance Surgery is a leading specialist broker helping people with pre-existing conditions such as Crohn’s Disease to obtain life insurance. We assess your personal circumstances to allow us to source insurance from the whole of the market.

Crohn’s Disease Life Insurance

We understand that Crohn’s disease is a very volatile condition to suffer from, and it can vary dramatically from person to person. No matter the severity, we will try our hardest to get you the cover that you deserve.

There are a few factors that we will or may need to know, such as:

  • When were you diagnosed?
  • Are you on any medication?
  • Have you or are you awaiting any surgery?
  • How severe is your Crohn’s?
  • What part/ how much of the bowel is affected?

Just like Crohn’s, Crohn’s life insurance can be quite volatile. It is possible to get Crohn’s life insurance at standard rates, or with a small loading, if your Crohn’s is considered to be mild; if you have had no recent major flare ups, or you are on mild medication, it is possible that you can get Crohn’s Life Insurance at standard rates.

However, unfortunately, if you have a more severe form of Crohn’s it is highly likely that you will have to pay an increased premium as you are classed as a higher-risk than people with mild Crohn’s. The price of your cover will depend on the type or strength of the medication that you are taking, or if you have any other medical issues as a result of your Crohn’s.

Finally, if you do have any medical issues due to your Crohn’s, and you are due surgery to treat this e.g. fitting an ileostomy or colostomy bag, or a fistula removal, then it is likely that you will have to postpone your application until you are fully recovered from the surgery.

However, there is a possibility that we can arrange Crohn’s life insurance with a specialist provider during this time.

Crohn’s Disease Critical Illness Cover

Similarly to Crohn’s life insurance, Crohn’s critical illness cover can be available at standard rates if your Crohn’s is mild, you take mild medication or your Crohn’s has been dormant for a significant time period. Furthering this, insurance providers may also need to know if your Crohn’s affects your day-to-day activities i.e. can you work, or have you had any time off work due to your Crohn’s recently.

Again, if you are awaiting surgery as a result of Crohn’s disease, you will have to wait for a postponement period or arrange cover through a specialist provider.

Unfortunately, if you suffer from Crohn’s, it is highly likely that you will have to pay an increased premium for your cover, and Critical Illness tends to be less readily available if you suffer from a more severe form of the illness. In addition, some providers will be likely to add an exclusion for the Crohn’s onto the cover.

Crohn’s Disease Income Protection

It is possible to get Crohn’s income protection however it is highly unlikely that you will be able to get it at standard rates, this is unfortunately due to the fact that insurers view Crohn’s as a condition that can progress and cause medical issues that affect your ability to work. Furthering this, if your Crohn’s is severe, they may even exclude Crohn’s from your cover; this means that is you were unable to work due to your Crohn’s, your policy would not pay out as you would not be covered.

The insurance industry is always evolving and changing, and we are always pushing for changes to be made to improve access to insurance. Therefore, it is always worthwhile getting in touch to see how we can help you get the protection that you deserve.

  • Client: Male
  • Age: 39
  • Smoker status: Non-smoker
  • Medical condition: Crohn’s for gentleman
  • Cover date: 28th October 2019
  • Product type: Level life insurance
  • Cover amount: £170,000
  • Cover term: 26 years
  • Premium: £29.54

We were approached by this gentleman on the 18th October 2019 when he and his partner completed an enquiry through our website. Our advisor Mark S then called him back to discuss his life insurance needs. At this point he explained that they were looking for £170,000 of life insurance cover over 26 years to cover their mortgage, furthering this they were also looking for critical illness cover and income protection as well. Mark S then went on to ask about any pre-existing medical conditions they may both have, which is where he declared that he has recently been diagnosed with Crohn’s and that his partner has no medical issues. Due to this Mark was able to secure his partner the required cover, however the gentlemen was unable to obtain critical illness cover or income protection until 12 months has passed since his diagnosis. Due to this, Mark looked into a joint life insurance policy for the couple and managed to secure them £170,000 of cover for 26 years to cover their mortgage for a monthly premium of £29.54. This is an amazing premium considering that he has been recently diagnosed with a potentially high-risk medical condition and they now have peace of mind that their mortgage is covered should either of them pass away. Moreover, Mark S has scheduled a call once the gentleman has been diagnosed for 12 months so that he can get the full cover that he was looking for.

As a whole this was a positive outcome as they are both covered if one of them were to pass away in the future, and they have got cover for a great premium. Furthermore, the gentleman will be able to get the full cover that he wants when he has had his diagnosis for 12 months, then they will be covered for every possible eventuality.

  • Client: Female
  • Age: 36
  • Smoker status: non-smoker
  • Medical condition: Crohn’s disease
  • Cover date: 17th April
  • Product type: Life insurance
  • Cover amount: £300,000
  • Cover term: 34 years
  • Premium: £40.17

We were approached by this lady on the 10th April when she competed an enquiry through our website. Our advisor Greg then call her to discuss her pre-existing medical conditions and her life insurance needs. She explained that she was looking for £300,000 to cover her mortgage up to retirement age, which due to the fact that she is 36 would put the cover term at 34 years, ending when she is 70. She went on to explain that she suffers from mild Crohn’s disease that she is taking medication for, as well as having to be admitted to hospital in the last year due to her condition. However, this has not affected her in any other way and with an exception of the Crohn’s, she is in perfect health. Our advisor Greg then applied to one of our main-stream providers and secured her the Crohn’s life insurance that she needed; she is now covered for £300,000 over 34 years for a monthly premium of £40.17. This is a fantastic premium considering the fact that the lady was looking for a fairly large amount of cover and has a pre-existing medical condition that has had a recent flare up of symptoms, both of which would increase the premium.

Overall, the lady was so pleased that we were able to find her cover as she doesn’t have to worry about what would happen to her family and her mortgage if she were to pass away unexpectedly. We are delighted that we have been able to help another customer to get the cover that they needed as it will take a weight off their shoulders knowing that they have the protection they thought was impossible to achieve.

What is Crohns Disease

Crohns is a condition that causes inflammation of the gut. Th affected area can occur at any point through the digestive system and can vary in size from just a few centimetres to a large stretch of the gut. Crohns is referred to as being 'chronic' as it is an ongoing condition without a cure, symptoms need to be managed. There can be times of good health, known as remission, and other times when acute attacks occur. Symptoms vary in type and severity but include stomach pains and diarrhoea, loss of appetite and weight and feeling tired and generally unwell.

Living with Crohns

With Crohns Disease comes some practical and emotional challenges of life. Sometimes time off work and other commitments is required through a flare up. It is a good idea to be open about your condition with families and your employer. Diet is another consideration as some find particular foods can aggravate the condition, this can be very individual so it is about finding what suits you.

Possible Complications

Inflammation of the bowel can cause scar tissue to form. This is referred to as a stricture and can cause an obstruction meaning waste cannot pass. Usually, surgery is required to rectify. Another possible complication is the development of ulcers known as fistulas. Small fistulas don't generally cause a problem but larger ones can become infected and cause additional symptoms, often these are treatable with medication, although surgery is sometimes required.
