A Quick Guide to HIV Life Insurance

HIV Critical Illness Cover.

As there have been huge developments in the insurance world for people living with HIV, we can now help you to obtain critical illness cover, as well as income protection.

A critical illness cover (CIC)  policy pays out a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with a critical illness defined under your policy wording. If you already have life insurance, critical illness cover may already be part of it. Critical illness cover policies can vary in terms of the conditions that they will cover and the amount they will pay out in the event of a claim so it’s important to find one that covers you.

Most critical illness policies will cover:

  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Liver or kidney failure
  • Heart attack
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Major organ transplant

Our specialists in life insurance for HIV positive individuals will be happy to discuss all available options with you.

HIV Income Protection.

If you are running or supporting a household with bills to pay, it’s a good idea to consider Income Protection.

This is especially important for contractors or anyone who is self-employed as they don’t have access to sick pay. Therefore, if you were unable to work due to illness or injury, it could become difficult to pay your outgoing costs.

Having an Income Protection policy in place can therefore take away any stress and help you to pay your rent, mortgage or monthly bills.

HIV Life Insurance Costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

We answer your most frequently asked questions.

How does having HIV affect life insurance premiums?

Similar to other pre-existing medical conditions, if you are HIV positive you will likely pay higher premiums than someone who isn’t. The exact amount depends on your personal circumstances which will be assessed when you put forward your application.

However, the good news is that there have been some huge insurance developments in the last 5 years that are now allowing people living with HIV, diabetes, post cancer, Crohn’s and many more conditions to get better cover at a more affordable price. We are very proud to be part of a movement that has fought for change in this space. We are confident that on most occasions we can save people who have health conditions money on their policy.

Our team of experts have an extremely in-depth knowledge of underwriting criteria which means that we are incredibly well placed to be able to obtain the best premiums for you and your individual circumstances.

Due to the recent changes in life insurance underwriting for HIV, we have seen a number of previous restrictions lifted. We now have access to standard rates and ‘whole of life‘ cover with no term restrictions if you are living with HIV, your viral load is undetectable and CD4 count is high.

In this situation, it is well worth reviewing your existing cover, especially if it was obtained several years ago as it is very likely that some of these changes could benefit you. The Insurance Surgery also offers a free Annual Review service to all our existing / new clients. This means that we constantly make sure that you have the right cover for your ever changing life and check for any changes in underwriting.

HIV Statistics in the UK

  • It is estimated that 106,890 people in the UK are living with HIV.
  • New diagnoses have been declining since their peak in 2005.
  • 37% of new diagnoses in 2020 were in London.
  • 1 in 16 people living with HIV in the UK do not know that they have the virus.
  • 97% of those on treatment are virally suppressed, which means they can’t pass the virus on.

HIV Symptoms

People living with HIV can remain undiagnosed for a long period of time. However, they could still experience symptoms, such as:

  1. Within a week to 10 days post infection, there can be severe flu-like symptoms, fever, aches, sore throat and a rash on the chest. Also possibly fatigue, nausea, and diarrhoea.
  2. Following early symptoms, these may pass and a person can remain symptom-free for many years. This is known as the asymptomatic stage.
  3. Moving into the symptomatic phase, this is when the immune system has become so damaged that the body becomes unable to offer defence against infection. This could be bacterial, fungal or viral infections.
  4. A diagnosis of AIDS is given when one of the most commonly occurring illnesses due to HIV take hold, these are referred to as ‘AIDS-defining illnesses’.

HIV Facts

  • HIV is a life-long condition without any known cure at the moment.
  • Many people with treatment can still live a regular life with a normal lifespan.
  • There have been great developments in treatment and medication for HIV such as Triple Therapy (HAART) which can prevent the immune system from becoming damaged and therefore can prevent the occurrence of an AIDS-defining illness.
