PCFCL Cancer – Case Study

This case study features Erick, a 40-year-old self-employed individual who approached the Insurance Surgery to obtain cancer life insurance. Unfortunately, he had been diagnosed in 2019 with a rare form of cancer known as Primary Cutaneous Follicular Centre Lymphoma. Thankfully, Ericks cancer had been treated successfully.

What is Primary Cutaneous Follicular Centre Lymphoma (PCFCL):

  • PCFCL is a rare type of lymphoma that arises in the skin
  • PCFCL Accounts for only about 10% of all cutaneous lymphomas
  • It typically presents as a solitary, slowly growing nodule or plaque, usually located on the trunk, upper extremities, or head and neck region
  • PCFCL is considered a low-grade lymphoma and is associated with an excellent prognosis. However, it can occasionally progress to involve lymph nodes or other organs which can lead to a more aggressive cancer

Despite being in good health following his successful treatment. Erick was declined life insurance by two different insurers due to his prior cancer diagnosis. It was at this point that he reached out to the Insurance Surgery for expert guidance and assistance. Erick consulted with our expert adviser, Sam, who supported Erick through the application process. To Erick’s benefit his health status was good, which would support Sam’s case when applying for life Insurance on Ericks behalf.

Erick’s Health status:

  • non-smoker – will keep premiums low
  • no other medical conditions – reduces the risk of other medical conditions arising
  • no ongoing medication requirements – reduced risk of cancer reoccurring

Sam began to enquire about the possibility of obtaining cover for Erick and was informed that the case would need to be assessed before a determination could be made. Other insurers had also been approached but had offered cover only after a waiting period of three years from the end of treatment, and at a higher monthly premium.

 Cancer life insurance facts:

  1. Cancer is one of the most common reasons why insurers may decline a policy or charge a higher premium. This is because cancer can increase the risk of mortality and may make it more difficult for insurers to calculate the risk of insuring someone.
  2. However, having a history of cancer does not automatically mean that you will be declined life insurance. Each case is assessed individually, considering factors such as:
    1. Type of cancer
    2. Stage of cancer
    3. Time since diagnosis
    4. Treatment received
  3. Some insurers may offer cover with a waiting period. The waiting period can vary from a few months to a few years, depending on the insurer and the type of cancer.
  4. In some cases, insurers may require a medical examination or access to medical records before offering cover.
  5. It is important to work with a knowledgeable insurance broker, like the Insurance Surgery who can help navigate the process of obtaining life insurance cover for individuals with a history of cancer.
  6. A broker can help identify insurers who are
    1. More likely to offer cover
    2. Provide advice on the application process
    3. Negotiate on behalf of the client to obtain the best possible terms

The Insurance Surgery Support Erick’s Life Insurance Application:

Sam wanted the best for Erick and negotiated with the insurer to obtain cover that would meet Erick’s needs and provide financial security for his family. Ein addition to the negotiations, Erick was required to provide a specialist medical letter, that confirmed the use of effective treatments to treat the cancer. Erick requested this and within a few weeks the letter was with the insurer.

The support from Sam was crucial in helping Erick navigate the process of obtaining life insurance, despite his cancer diagnosis. With our assistance, he was able to find a policy that provided him and his family with the peace of mind they needed during a difficult time.

Supporting the approval of the application:

  • Specialist medical letter, confirming effective treatment
  • Specialist Broker taking the time to negotiate the case with the insurer

After the insurer reviewed the evidence that was provided, the application was approved. Sam had found Erick cover and within his budget.

  • Cover offered £650,000
  • Cover term is for a 20-year period
  • Monthly premium £78.36

This case study highlights the importance of working with a knowledgeable insurance broker who is familiar with the requirements of various insurers and can navigate the process of obtaining cover for clients with pre-existing medical conditions. It also shows that even clients with rare medical conditions can obtain life insurance cover if the right approach is taken, and the necessary information is provided to the insurer.
