Life can be hard, and we all have our ways of coping and escaping. Sometimes when the escapism is better than real life – we want to stay in that state forever. This is when dependency can take hold and even the most strong-willed find it difficult to stop. That’s why we have partnered with Alcohol Change UK! A platform that provides access to high-quality support whenever someone needs it, without shame or stigma.

Driven by a shared belief that every person deserves to live a full life free from alcohol harm, their aim is to drive alcohol awareness via the 5 key changes below:

Five key changes:

  1. Improved knowledge
  2. Better policies and regulation
  3. Shifted cultural norms
  4. Improved drinking behaviours
  5. More and better support and treatment.

In this case study we discuss Emily and John’s journey from depression and alcohol dependency to living alcohol-free with 3 children – looking to buy their second home.

Emily and John met whilst working together at their local pub over 10 years ago. At first, their love for late nights and lock-ins was harmless fun. That was until Emily’s mum suddenly passed away. Due to this Emily grappled with bouts of depression that inadvertently led to alcohol dependence. This struggle took an emotional toll on both of them – which led both to drink heavily over the course of the next 2 years. Both would often miss work, cancel on days out with friends and get really drunk at family parties.

It wasn’t until John’s mother sat them both down and confessed that it felt like she was losing them, that they finally wanted to regain control. Both Emily and John went to their doctor as well as sourced guidance from others in a similar position.

5 years on the couple have 3 children. Having worked hard to provide a loving household Emily and John are in a position to buy their second home. Emily and John hadn’t considered life insurance until bills started to rise, as they managed well between the both of them. However, calculating costs they both realised that if something were to happen to one of them or both – what would they or the children do? That’s when they had a quick search online for life insurance, completing a comparison form online.

Due to their history of alcohol abuse and depression, their application was declined. Worrying that their past will now hinder their future, they search for alcohol life insurance.

That’s when they contacted the Insurance Surgery, known for their dedication in assisting families in similar situations. When Suzie, their dedicated protection adviser called the couple back, she went through the application process, empathically and at a pace Emily and John were happy with.

Why life insurance is an important consideration:

  • Financial safety net: for your loved ones in case of your untimely passing. It ensures that they can maintain their quality of life, cover living expenses, and achieve their financial goals.
  • Debt Cover: Life insurance can cover outstanding debts such as mortgages, personal loans, and credit card balances, preventing your loved ones from inheriting these financial responsibilities.
  • Education Funding: If you have dependents, life insurance can ensure that funds are available for their education, including school and college tuition fees.
  • Estate Planning: Life insurance can play a role in estate planning, providing liquidity to cover estate taxes and ensuring that your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  • Business Continuity: For business owners, life insurance can be used to facilitate a smooth transition of business ownership, protect against financial loss due to the death of a key employee or partner, and fund buy-sell agreements.

Once Suzie had gathered all the information required and learned of their non-smoker status, stable careers and that the alcohol dependency was over 5 years ago. Suzie knew there would be options for the couple, which would be affordable.

Suzie completed the application and within a few hours called Emily and John back to provide the options available. Emily and John went with the below option – offering them cover for the mortgage and inheritance for the children.
