Case Study 1

  • Client: Male
  • Age: 43
  • Smoker status: Non-smoker
  • Medical condition: Heart attack, tinnitus, asthma
  • Cover date: 19th June 2019
  • Product type: Level life insurance
  • Cover amount: £300,000
  • Cover term: 18 years
  • Premium: £127.06

We were approached by this gentleman on the 14th March 2019 when he completed an enquiry through our website. Our advisor Alex then called him back to discuss his pre-existing medical conditions and his life insurance needs. At this point he explained that he was looking for £300,000 of cover for an 18-year period, and that he was a non-smoker with asthma, tinnitus, high BMI and he has had a heart attack at the age of 38 that required surgery. Alex then took this information and applied to one of our specialist providers for him due to the age the client suffered his heart attack which meant fewer providers were able to consider offering cover. Despite this, Alex managed to secure him £300,000 of cover for 18 years for a monthly premium of £127.06. This is a fantastic premium considering the client’s medical history and the amount of life cover he required.

Overall, the gentleman was delighted that we have been able to secure him the life insurance that he deserved, and we were able to keep the premiums within his budget as well. We were so pleased that we were able to give the gentleman the peace of mind that he needed, especially as he could be considered to be a more challenging case given the age that he had his heart attack. We love finding cover for people who may have thought that getting protection was impossible, and we want to help as many people as we can to get the protection that they deserve.

Case Study 2

  • Client: Male
  • Age: 44
  • Smoker status: non-smoker
  • Medical condition: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (heart disease)
  • Cover date: 1st October 2019
  • Product type: Decreasing life insurance
  • Cover amount: £230,000
  • Cover term: 27 years
  • Premium: £46.69

We were approached by this gentleman on the 4th September 2019 when he completed an enquiry through our website. After receiving this enquiry, our advisor Mark S then got in touch with the gentleman to further discuss his life insurance needs and any pre-existing medical conditions that he has; at this point he disclosed that he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and was looking for £230,000 over 27 years to cover his mortgage. After learning this, Mark S suggested decreasing cover for the gentleman, as this cover is specifically designed to cover mortgages, and has cheaper premiums. The gentleman agreed that this was the best option for him, and after a small waiting period due to the gentleman having a medical procedure, Mark S secured him £230,000 of decreasing cover for 27 years for a monthly premium of £46.69 on the 1st October 2019.

This is an amazing premium, especially considering that the gentleman has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which can be a potentially dangerous medical condition; and insurers will therefore place a loading onto premiums to account for the added risk. As a whole, the gentleman was delighted with this outcome, as he now has the protection he needs should anything happen to him. We were also delighted with this outcome as we are passionate about protecting families and another customer now has the peace of mind that they deserve.

Heart Attack Statistics UK...

  • Heart attacks most commonly occur in people over the age of 45
  • In England, each year approximately 50,000 men and 32,000 women suffer from a heart attack
  • Heart Attack is one of the most common needs for emergency medical assistance
  • Around 1 in 3 people who experienced a heart attack, die as a result
  • For those surviving more than 28 days post attack, most will go on to live for many years

Symptoms of a Heart Attack...

  • Chest pain that can spread to the neck, jaw, arms and back. The severity of the pain can be hugely varied between heart attack and sufferers
  • Feeling of panic / anxiousness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheaded and feeling weak
  • If full cardiac arrest occurs and the heart stops the person will not move, breath or respond to any situation

What Causes a Heart Attack?

A Heart Attack occurs when the blood flow from the heart is interrupted. Without the constant supply of blood, the tissue in the heart becomes permanently damaged. The main cause of an attack is coronary heart disease as this causes blockages in the arteries due to a build-up of cholesterol. The accumulation of these deposits are called plaques. If a plaque bursts it causes a blood clot at the site which can prevent the flow of blood to the heart and therefore cause a heart attack.

Lifestyle factors strongly influence the chance of a Heart Attack. Just some of the things that cause an increased risk:

  • Smoking
  • Poor diet that is high in fat
  • Being overweight
  • Not staying fit and active
  • Consuming excessive levels of alcohol

Some health conditions also increase the level of risk.

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Poorly managed High Blood Pressure

Heart Attack Treatment

Treatment options vary with the severity of the heart attack. Emergency widening of the coronary artery can be done by a coronary angioplasty, this procedure allows a stent (a flexible metal mesh) to be fitted to help keep the artery open. If this type of surgery isn't an option a coronary artery bypass graft can be an option where a blood vessel from elsewhere in the body can be used as a graft.

Medication may be prescribed to break down blood clots. Also, blood thinning medication is often prescribed to avoid future clots occurring.

After a Heart Attack

If the Heart Attack was mild it is possible to experience no further complications, others who have suffered a major attack can have continued problems such as arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) due to the heart muscle being damaged. These can sometimes be controlled by medication, or may require a pacemaker to be fitted to regulate the heartbeat.

Staying well post Heart Attack means making lifestyle changes such as...

  • Eating well
  • Being active
  • Keeping weight down
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Reducing alcohol intake

Long term medication is required, some typical types are...

  • ACE inhibitors to lower blood pressure
  • Anti-platelets to alter the consistency of the blood
  • Beta-blockers to relax the heart muscle
  • Statins to lower cholesterol
