What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple Sclerosis affects more than 2 million people throughout the world and is a disease of the central nervous system involving the brain and spinal cord.
Multiple Sclerosis is caused by damage to myelin which is a fatty tissue that protects the nerves in much the same way as the plastic covering around an electric cable protects the wires. The myelin allows the nerve to transmit signals rapidly, therefore, resulting in body movements to be performed with minimal conscious effort.
With MS these signals cannot be transmitted as effectively as the myelin is lost and this causes the symptoms associated with MS. Where the myelin is lost the area can appear as a hardened scar. With MS these scars appear in various areas of the spinal cord and brain. The translation of Multiple Sclerosis is 'many scars'.
Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis vary widely and can include tingling sensations and blurred vision through to very weak limbs and chronic fatigue.

Case Study 1
- Client: Female
- Age: 46
- Smoker status: non-smoker
- Medical condition: Secondary progressive multiple sclerosis
- Cover date: 19th June 2019
- Product: Level life insurance
- Cover amount: £95,000
- Cover term: 10 years
- Premium: £37.73
We were approached by this lady on the 19th February 2019 when she completed an enquiry through our website. Our advisor Sam P then called her to discuss her pre-existing medical conditions and her life insurance needs. At this point she disclosed that she was a non-smoker with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SP MS) and was looking for £190,000 of MS life insurance for mortgage cover. Sam then took this information and applied to one of our specialist providers for her, he successfully found her a quote for £190,00 pounds of cover. Unfortunately, due to the fact that she has SP MS with fairly significant symptoms the premium quoted was outside her budget, especially as her condition means that she cannot work. As a result of this, and following discussions with the client, they decided to reduce the amount of cover to £95,000 so that it was within her budget; Sam secured her £95,000 of cover over a 10-year period for £37.73. This is a great premium given her medical history and her current symptoms. She was delighted that we were able to secure her some protection that was within her budget, as she now knows that if she were to pass away unexpectedly then her outstanding mortgage would be reduced to a level that would mean it would be affordable for her dependents to manage and continue to live in the property.
As a whole, we were delighted to get this lady the protection that she needed, unfortunately we she could not afford the full amount of cover that she initially wanted, but we did manage to secure her some protection that she did not have previously. We love helping people to get the cover that they need and we are passionate about helping as many people as we can to get the protection that they thought would have been impossible to achieve.
Case Study 2
- Client: Female
- Age: 51
- Smoker status: Non-smoker
- Medical conditions: Secondary progressive MS and anxiety
- Product type: Life Cover
- Cover amount: £20,000
- Cover term: 10 years
- Premium: £30.14
We were approached by this lady on the late 2019 when she completed an enquiry through our website. Our advisor Greg then called her to discuss her life insurance needs and her pre-existing medical conditions, at this point the lady disclosed that she has secondary progressive MS and anxiety, and that she was looking for cover for 20 years for a maximum premium of £50 per month. Greg took this information and researched which provider would be best for the customer. He then applied to one of our specialist providers and retrieved a few quotes for different amounts of cover. As secondary progressive MS can be a very difficult condition to obtain cover for, the premiums can be subject to a relatively significant increase. Given her budget the client chose to take cover for £20,000 over 10 years, for a monthly premium of £30.14. This is a very good premium considering the lady’s difficult medical conditions as well as a few smaller medical issues that she has had throughout her lifetime. Furthering this, we also managed to secure cover for her partner, meaning that she could reduce the amount of cover that she needs.
Overall, this is a great outcome as it can be very difficult to find cover for someone with secondary progressive MS and we were delighted to be able to find protection for someone who previously struggled to find life insurance.
