Most Common Questions

We answer your most frequently asked questions.

Generally, there will be some sort of impact on your life insurance premiums if there is a history of MS in your medical history due to the risk factors for underwriters. There are a number of considerations which will be taken into account that will determine the size of any premium loading and any restrictions to term. Most insurance providers will look at:

  • Type of MS (i.e. Relapsing Remitting, Secondary Progressive, Primary Progressive etc.)
  • Date of Diagnosis
  • Walking aids (which used and how often)
  • Date of the last relapse
  • Any restrictions to daily living

There are some insurance providers in the market now that may offer Critical Illness Cover for people who suffer from MS, depending on the severity of your condition. There may be exclusions applied to your MS Critical Illness Cover policy so it is important to understand what exactly is being offered to you. Our team of experts will search the whole insurance market for you to find the best cover for you and your family.

Not at all! Our team of expert advisors is used to dealing with clients who have been declined in the past and we have a proven track record of being able to obtain cover where others have failed. Usually, you will have been declined in the past because the company that dealt with you previously does not specialise in pre-existing conditions and does not understand your condition enough.

We have been helping people with pre-existing medical conditions to obtain cover since 1999 so have years of expertise and we have helped thousands of families, individuals, and businesses to get the cover they need. Our team of experts knows exactly how the life insurance underwriting market works and can identify which providers are best for you and your circumstances.

But we would say that… don’t just take our word for it! Read our Reviews on Feefo, Trustpilot or Google!

Facts About Multiple Sclerosis:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition and therefore is linked to activity in the brain and spinal cord, it is also a chronic condition (life-long) as there is currently no cure. It is caused by damage to the nerves where the immune system attacks the coating of the nerves (called myelin) which is a fatty protein.

The meaning of Multiple Sclerosis:

Sclerosis: Meaning the scarring or toughening of small sections of tissue.
Multiple: Relating to the fact that the effects occur in several areas around the brain and spinal cord.

MS Statistics (UK)

  • Life expectancy is currently 5 to 10 years lower (and falling thanks to medical advances)
  • Estimated 110,000 people living with MS (2020)
  • Diagnosis levels increasing by 2.4% per year
  • Most common age of diagnosis is 40’s and 50’s
  • Most common in females (272 versus 106 per 100,000 are women)
  • Females in the 50-59 age group are 3x more likely than males of a similar age

Symptoms of MS

The effects of Multiple Sclerosis can be incredibly varied from one person to another which can also cause issues in completely different areas of the body.

Most Common Symptoms Are:

  • Eyesight: Blurred vision
  • Walking: Difficulty walking or use of walking aids
  • Fatigue: Feeling tired or weak
  • Bladder: Difficulty controlling bladder
  • Muscles: Spasms or stiffness
  • Coordination: Problems with balance or coordination

The frequency and severity of symptoms (attacks) will depend on the type of MS (see below) and this can come in certain periods and gradually increase in severity over time.

Types Of MS:

Relapsing-remitting

Over 8 in 10 people who have been diagnosed with MS have this type.

The name comes from the fact that the person with this type of MS will suffer attacks / episodes called relapses, which tend to last for several days, weeks or even months. The recovery period will usually be a similar period of time. The periods in between these episodes are known as ‘remissions’ and these can last for years at a time.

Primary Progressive

Only around 1 in 10 people with MS begin with a steady increase of symptoms.

Primary Progressive MS is where the symptoms increase in severity steadily over a period of several years with no periods of remission between attacks. There are periods where the condition / symptoms are seen to stabilise, however.

Below is our summary of how Pre-Existing Medical Conditions may affect your insurance needs.

The cost of obtaining life insurance when you live with Multiple Sclerosis will vary greatly dependent on several factors. The main questions life insurance companies will need answering will be, the type of Multiple Sclerosis you have, the severity of your symptoms, your age when the Multiple Sclerosis was diagnosed and the frequency of your attacks.

It may be possible to obtain life insurance for a small increase in premium but there is also a possibility, in the most severe of cases, that cover could be declined.

As Multiple Sclerosis is classed as a Critical Illness it is unlikely you will secure this type of cover. We do however have alternatives to the classical Critical Illness Insurance policies for clients with Multiple Sclerosis.

If you live with Multiple Sclerosis and require an Income Protection insurance it can be difficult to arrange.

We have access to specialist policies that offer both long term and short term cover but your Multiple Sclerosis would generally be excluded as would any other related conditions.

Cover for chronic conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis would generally be excluded from a Private Medical Insurance policy. It may be possible to secure the cover with a Health Cash Plan or other specialist policies.
