What Is Life Insurance for Expats?

British expat life insurance is financial protection for UK nationals living abroad. This type of life insurance can protect you and your family in a number of ways should anything happen to you whilst living outside of the UK, offering a lump sum payment to the policyholder’s beneficiaries. The Insurance Surgery has experience in finding policies for expats looking for coverage worldwide.

During your discussion with one of The Insurance Surgery’s experts, they’ll first ensure that you meet the criteria for securing expat life insurance. This includes:

  • You are a UK National with a UK address
  • You have a UK-based liability, e.g. mortgage (either buy-to-let or personal), family, potential inheritance tax liability or ownership of a business registered and based in the UK
  • A UK bank account to pay for the policy

Provided that you meet the key criteria, you’ll then have a detailed discussion with our team so that we can best understand what your insurance requirements are. We’ll need to find out why you need coverage in order to best advise on which type of policy best suits you and your needs. Our experts will also consider:

  • What country you live/intend to live in (i.e. Does the Foreign Office issue advice against travel in that country?)
  • Purpose of Cover
  • How long you have lived there
  • How long you intend to stay there
  • What your occupation will be

On top of this information, personal circumstances, which are typically considered during regular insurance processes, may also affect the outcome of your application. As we mentioned, there are a number of policy types that may be suited to you.

Critical Illness Cover

Whilst often difficult to obtain, it is possible to secure critical illness cover for expats. Generally, as long as you are not living in a dangerous country and you do not plan to live there indefinitely, then you should be able to secure critical illness cover.

Group Life Insurance

Provided to a group of three or more employees by insurers, group life insurance offers a death-in-service benefit which pays out a lump sum to beneficiaries if an employee dies while with the company.

Shareholder Protection

Shareholder protection pays out a lump sum if a business’ shareholder dies to help keep the business afloat and support the remaining shareholders in retaining control of their former partner’s shares.

Key Person Insurance

Key man life insurance pays out a lump sum on the death of a key person in the business. This can help to cover the costs of training, recruitment and even the loss of revenue.

Global Health Insurance

roviding international cover for expats and local nationals, global health insurance offers international emergency assistance, extensive preventative and wellness benefits and an international network of service providers with limits of up to 5 million USD.

Mining and Energy Forum Health Insurance Plan

This health insurance plan is exclusively designed for mining, oil, gas, energy and petrochemical companies in the UK, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and South Africa.

If you already have life insurance before moving from the UK, it is possible that some or all of your cover will become invalid. This depends purely on the individual insurer’s terms and conditions and your personal circumstances, i.e., where you’re moving to, what UK liabilities you have, and what type of coverage you have. If you feel like your cover may not be valid due to you moving abroad, we’ll be happy to check for you or even put a new policy in place so you have the best cover possible.

What Are the Most Dangerous Occupations?

Some jobs come with higher risks, making life insurance essential. From construction workers to firefighters, those in hazardous roles need financial protection for themselves and their families. Discover the most dangerous jobs in the UK and the best insurance options to stay covered.

Life Cover Terminology

Understanding life insurance terminology is essential for policyholders to make informed decisions about their cover, we have broken down the meaning for some of the most used terms.
