Asthma life insurance cover is generally obtainable and in today's insurance market and rates are generally improving. We have seen improvements in rates for a number of chronic medical conditions such as Diabetes and Asthma over the past several years thanks to improved mortality data and medical advances.
We generally find that ratings for Asthma can vary dramatically from standard rates upwards and good levels with minor symptoms are generally fairly simple to deal with.
Some possible issues to be aware of when applying for Asthma Life Insurance:
- Smokers with Asthma would generally incur a loading
- Any hospitalisation for severe attacks within the last 5yrs

It is possible to obtain Critical Illness Cover for someone with Asthma in most circumstances unless the Asthma is very severe. Case Study 1
- Client: Female
- Age: 37
- Smoker status: Non-smoker
- Medical condition: Asthma, high blood pressure and fibroids
- Cover date: 9th September 2019
- Product type: Level life insurance
- Cover amount: £100,000
- Cover term: 30 years
- Premium: £25.37
We were approached by this lady on the 1st November 2018 when she completed an enquiry on our website. Our advisor Suzie then called her back to discuss her life insurance needs and any medical conditions that she has. At this point she disclosed that she has asthma, high blood pressure and fibroids. She also told Suzie that she was looking for £150,000 of cover over a 30-year period. Our advisor Suzie then took this information and applied to one of our mainstream providers, however the lady was not happy with the price, therefore Suzie suggested sending out for a GP report. She suggested this as a GP report may reveal that she is in better health than the insurers believe from the application and therefore they may reduce the premiums. Unfortunately, a GP report can take some time to be completed so the lady had to wait, and during this time she was referred to specialists for further tests for other conditions as well as further assessments for her asthma. This also added time onto the application as it cannot be completed until each result was finalised and the results added onto the GP report. As a result of this, the lady’s application was finally ready at the start of September 2019; due to the fact that the lady’s budget meant she was unable to afford the £150,000 of cover, Suzie applied for £100,000 of cover to another one of our mainstream providers and successfully secured her £100,000 of cover over a 30-year period for a monthly premium of £25.37. This is an amazing premium, especially as the lady has moderately serious asthma as well as various other medical conditions.
As a whole, both ourselves and the client were delighted that we could finally get her covered, especially after such a long process from initial enquiry to the application being accepted. We are passionate about protecting families and will try our hardest to get you covered, no matter how long it takes. Moreover, this is an amazing outcome for this lady considering the length of time it took to complete her application, the combination of medical conditions and the number of medical tests and specialist appointments she had to attend. All in all, this is a great premium and the lady now has peace of mind that her family is protected.
Case Study 2
- Client: Male
- Age: 45
- Smoker status: Non-smoker
- Medical condition: Depression, asthma and migraines
- Cover date: 23rd September 2019
- Product type: Increasing life insurance and critical illness cover
- Cover amount: £100,000
- Cover term: 20 years
- Premium: £103.19
We were approached by this gentleman on the 23rd September 2019 when the he completed an enquiry through our website. Our advisor Sam P then got in touch to ask what life insurance requirements he had and what pre-existing medical conditions he has had or is currently suffering from. At this point the gentleman explained that he was looking for £100,000 of life insurance and critical illness cover for 20 years and that he suffers from depression, asthma and migraines. He explained that his depression is now mild although he does still experience some symptoms, and that 20 years ago, he had attempted suicide once. Due to the fact that he still suffers from depression, he was able to get the cover that he wanted however it was slightly more expensive than standard rates. Sam P managed to get him £100,000 of life and critical illness cover for 20 years for a monthly premium of £103.19 on the 23rd September 2019. This may seem like an expensive premium but the amount of cover that he was requesting, as well as the addition of critical illness cover, and the history of depression will all add value onto the premium. As a result of this, his premium is very good as he is covered for a large amount of cover for a long period of time and without any exclusions on his critical illness cover.
Overall, we were so pleased with this result as he is now covered for both life insurance and critical illness. Furthermore, the gentleman was also pleased that we managed to find him cover, and so quickly, as he is now protected for all eventualities.
