Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad https://www.the-insurance-surgery.co.uk/blog/rio-ferdinand-being-mum-and-dad
BBC Documentary - Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad

Ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand recently starred in a documentary with the BBC to show people how he had coped several months on from the tragic loss of his wife, Rebecca Ferdinand. This hard hitting documentary shows how Rio Ferdinand managed mentally and emotionally after the death of his 34 year old wife after a 3 year battle with Cancer and then having to deal with raising his 3 young children alone.

This program has been hailed as a triumph to help expose the issues being experienced by thousands of widowed men across the country and Rio shows what an incredible person he is, especially for sharing his innermost personal thoughts and fears. This is a situation that none of us ever want to have to consider but it is a very real situation for many families and men across the UK which should not be ignored.

The emotional and financial issues following the death of a partner and especially when there are children to consider is unthinkable but a harsh reality that many of us must unfortunately face. This program raises a number of major questions and tackles them head on, such as:

- What do you do when you lose your partner with children?

- How do you talk to your children about the loss of a parent?

- Is it right to grieve or do you need to be strong for your children?

- What is the best way to cope mentally and emotionally?

- How do you cope financially and support your children if you don't have a professional footballers salary?

- How do you prepare for the loss of a partner and parent?

There is nothing worse than the thought of losing a loved one and especially when that person is the mother or father of your children so this documentary is a hard hitting way to tackle these very real issues head on.

Life Insurance is one of the most important considerations for any parent and too few families in the modern age leave themselves unprotected financially with no family life insurance (level term assurance), critical illness cover or income protection. As a father of 2 I find it incredible to believe that people will risk their own children's future financial security when it could be covered with a simple and affordable life insurance policy.
Thu, 30 Mar 2017 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.the-insurance-surgery.co.uk/blog/rio-ferdinand-being-mum-and-dad National No Smoking Day 2017 https://www.the-insurance-surgery.co.uk/blog/national-no-smoking-day-2017

National No Smoking Day 2017 (smokers life insurance)

Wednesday 8th March ’17 is ‘National No Smoking Day’ which is purely aimed at smokers and to promote the benefits of stopping smoking. The original Ash Wednesday was launched in 1983 and was previously known as ‘Quit for the Day’.

The Insurance Surgery: Life Insurance for Smokers (we aim to save you money!)

The Insurance Surgery is a leading life insurance specialist and we know a lot about the impacts of smoking on life insurance premiums as well as the potential future health risks. Most smokers are well aware of the risks related to smoking but few are aware of how smoking affects your life insurance premiums.

Fact: Smoking or use of any nicotine products will result in an increase to life insurance premiums which are usually double that of non-smokers.

Life insurance for smokers with pre-existing medical conditions

Life insurance for offshore workers will depend on the level of risk involved with your particular role and the industry that you work in. There is a vast difference between some of the low risk offshore occupations (e.g. administration, management staff or cooks) to some of the high risk occupations (e.g. divers, engineers, helicopter pilots or medics). Our experience shows us that some offshore workers life insurance applications will be accepted at standard rates, especially for low risk jobs.

If your job role is classed as high risk or higher risk for offshore working life insurance then you may find that there is an increase to the premium that you will pay. Life insurance for offshore workers is underwritten based on the levels of risk involved which can be very high in certain roles and industries. Where jobs are classed as high risk for offshore workers for life insurance then we will need to research the market to find the best insurance provider for you and we do all of that work for you.

You may also have been declined life insurance because of the fact that you work offshore and the type of job that you have. This does not necessarily mean that you cannot get life insurance for offshore work as it may be that the previous application was simply to the wrong insurance provider.

The Insurance Surgery is also a leading life insurance expert for people who have a pre-existing medical condition. We have a vast amount of experience in working with people who have some sort of medical history as well as smokers looking for life insurance. There are some additional underwriting factors that need to be considered for smokers looking for life insurance who also have a pre-existing condition.

1) Additional life insurance underwriting restrictions for smokers with pre-existing medical conditions: Life insurance for smokers who also have a pre-existing medical condition can be more restrictive than for non-smokers, depending on the medical condition. For example, if you have Diabetes and you are a smoker looking for life insurance then you may find that certain life insurance underwriters / providers will decline cover due to the additional health risks relating to your Diabetes combined with smoking.

2) Premium loadings / ratings for smokers with pre-existing medical conditions: Another important factor to be considered for life insurance for smokers with pre-existing medical conditions is that any premium loading will be potentially doubled. Life insurance premiums for smokers are already higher (double) than for non-smokers and any additional % loading would be based on the initial premium.

Example of smokers life insurance with pre-existing medical conditions:

Non-smoker premium: £30

Premium loading: 100% (for pre-existing medical condition)

Final premium: £60 (increase = £30)

Smokers premium: £60

Premium loading: 100% (for pre-existing medical condition)

Final premium: £120 (increase = £60)

As you can clearly see from the example given above, life insurance premiums for smokers with additional loading work out to be double that of non-smokers

3) What happens to my life insurance if I quit smoking?: If you give up smoking and use of any nicotine / tobacco based products for more than 12 months then you would be classed as a non-smoker by life insurance underwriters. You must also have not used any nicotine replacement products (e.g. Patches, Nicotine Gum, E-Cigarettes etc.) in the past 12 months.

4) What happens to my life insurance if I start smoking?: If you already have life insurance in place and decide to start smoking then your existing cover should be unaffected. Most life insurance is written on a ‘guaranteed’ basis which means that once it has been underwritten and offered then that is the premium you will pay for the remaining term of the policy.

Important: If you lie or fail to disclose that you are a smoker on your life insurance application then you may find that your cover will be void in the event of a claim. Life insurance companies may request a medical report and if it is discovered that you were a smoker when you applied for cover then it will be up to the discretion of the insurance provider as to whether they pay and how much they pay out.

At The Insurance Surgery we pride ourselves on providing an outstanding service to our clients which means that we will constantly review your circumstances in the future. As part of our Annual Review service we will re-contact you in the future to establish your current circumstances and hopefully save you money on your life insurance premiums.

One of the first questions we would ask anyone who has been accepted on smoking rates for life insurance is “Have you given up smoking?”. If we find that you have since given up smoking and have a life insurance policy through The Insurance Surgery on smoking rates then we would usually be able to save you money instantly.

For more information about Smoking and Life Insurance for Smokers click: Life Insurance Smoking Guide

For more information or to speak to one of our life insurance experts feel free to submit an enquiry or call 0800 083 2829.
Wed, 08 Mar 2017 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.the-insurance-surgery.co.uk/blog/national-no-smoking-day-2017 Diabetes Life Insurance is changing https://www.the-insurance-surgery.co.uk/blog/diabetes-life-insurance-is-changing
Diabetes Life Insurance (February 2017) - New products and lower premiums!

The Insurance Surgery is one of the leading life insurance specialists for people with Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes thanks to our links with a number of Diabetes websites, Diabetes Charities and Diabetes organisations. Through these strong links we have developed a high level knowledge and understanding of Diabetes and how it affects the lives of people who suffer from Diabetes, added to that we also have an incredibly detailed knowledge of how underwriting for Diabetes Life Insurance works across the market.

We have recently been working with several of the UK's top insurance providers to help them to launch products that are specifically designed for people with Diabetes to help improve service and to price the products more fairly. This development has been the result of several years of campaigning with a number of leading insurance underwriters to try to get them to do something to bring the life insurance sector up to date with modern treatment and to give more people with Diabetes the opportunity to obtain life insurance.

Recently we saw the launch of the Vitality Wellness Optimiser product which we are proud to say that we were part of the development panel to help bring the product to market in the way that we think our Diabetes clients would want. This product is a revolutionary new concept that offers some incredible upfront premium discounts (up to 65%) and an additional discount is applied for people with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes and for people with high BMI levels. The next stage of the product is that it offers the person with Diabetes or High BMI covered by the policy the opportunity to influence their premiums by continuing to manage their condition / health and provide the insurer with annual Diabetes or BMI reports from their GP / Diabetes specialist.

Additionally, this product also offers all of the extra benefits that the normal Vitality Optimiser products offer which includes:

- FREE cinema tickets

- FREE Starbucks drinks

- Apple Watch 2 (From £69)

- 50% OFF running shoes

- Up to 25% OFF Ocado foods

- 75% OFF Champney's Spa Breaks

- Up to 40% OFF British Airways

- Up to 50% OFF Lloyds Pharmacies

As well as these amazing health rewards and benefits you can also be rewarded with Annual Cash Back of up to £125 per policy holder as well as the option of adding your children to the policy to cover them for Critical Illness.

A recent example of how much you could save on this plan is:

Client A (Age 40, Non-smoker)

Sum Assured: £250,000

Term: 30 years

Medical History: Type 2 Diabetes (Hba1c level: 7.6) / BMI: 32

Company

Legal & General

Aviva

LV=

Vitality

Premium

£56.65

£55.12

£63.85

£37.09

For more information about this or any other Diabetes Life Insurance then speak to the experts today... This Half Marathon (13.1 mile) is renowned for being one of the toughest on the list because of its many long relentless hills and how narrow the course is in places.

A huge thanks to my running partner on the day, Peter Curtis-Brown from Vitality and to everyone who very generously donated to our cause.

Getting there:

On the morning of the event, we drove from Durham up to South Shields which is where the finish area is located and where we were advised to park for ease of getting out later on. We set off at 7:45am to get there early and to avoid the traffic but it was still slow even at that time so best to leave plenty of time if you’re thinking about doing it. Parking in South Shields was already limited so we probably couldn’t have left it much later and the queue at the Metro station was already long enough at 8:30am.

NB. You can buy a pre-paid ticket before the event which is a good investment to avoid the queues

The start:

The nearest Metro station is Haymarket and you simply need to follow the crowd to the start area which is only 15 minutes on foot so not far at all. Next challenge is to drop your bags off before the baggage busses leave (we missed them) and you have ‘late busses’ which are there until 12noon if you miss the main ones. We then wondered down to our starting area which was the ‘White Zone’ for slower runners (like us!) and had around a 40 minute wait to get going but there was loads going on! The atmosphere was incredible and the spirit amongst the runners was fantastic.

NB. Queues for toilets are enormous so leave plenty of time!

The Run:

We left the start area at 11:10am (roughly) and worked our way through the city with the rest of the runners in our group and the support was phenomenal…! Having taken part in the London Marathon several years ago, I honestly never thought that I would ever see anything come close to that, but Newcastle and the North East did themselves proud! The streets of the city were lined with supporters, family members, charity busses and anyone else who you could possibly imagine. The biggest and most amazing moment is the Tyne Bridge in the centre of Newcastle and the sheer volume of people and noise as you cross over towards South Shields. As you then work your way out of the city and head towards the dual carriage way out of town, the support just goes on and on for miles which is just awe inspiring!

As you can imagine, there are several BIG hills along the route which are relentless at points and some are fairly steep so can take your breath away if you’re not prepared. Most of the time you can get through the pain simply by the number of people around you and the support from everyone watching along the way, it is incredible what it does for you!

Every mile is marked out along the route so you know where you’re up to and can pace yourself or just so you know how far you’ve already gone, and how far is left. Some mile markers appear to be worse than others as you can imagine and the worst ones for me were between 3 and 6 miles for some reason, but you never can predict what will happen on the day!

The Finish:

As the course winded its way in to South Shields you can clearly tell as things to pick up in every way, more people lining the streets and the noise is incredible! There are several long hills as you come in to the last 3 or 4 miles of the course which is probably the toughest bit of the run but the support seems to push you along. By now we had already been through several water and Lucozade stations as well as the shower units that you can run through to cool down (which were a god send!). Finally you reach the 12 mile marker and the atmosphere here is incredible so you can see why it’s an addictive event that people do year after year…!

There’s a steep hill that takes you down on to the sea front as you come in to the finish area and you then turn hard left on to the final straight section of the course. The mix of emotions at this point is amazing and there are so many people that you just don’t have time to think about how much your legs ache or how exhausted you feel.

The finish is marked out with 800 metre markers, followed by 400, then 200 and finally the finish line as you come on to the grass in the huge park in South Shields. I have never seen anything quite like it before and I certainly hope to be lucky enough to be able to take part in this event again because it all happens so fast and you can’t quite take it all in!

Mind Charity:

I’d like to say a HUGE thanks to the team at Mind Charity for all your support on the day from the seemingly hundreds of other Mind Charity runners and the AWESOME bus which was perfectly placed in the last mile or so! I couldn’t have done this without all of your support and we are incredibly proud to be able to do our bit to help raise money for this incredible cause…!

Fundraising:

So far we have raised nearly £900 for Mind from the Great North Run so a fantastic effort from all our generous supporters!

Written by: Dan Sharpe-Szunko (Managing Director)
Mon, 19 Sep 2016 10:30:00 +0000 https://www.the-insurance-surgery.co.uk/blog/running-through-your-mind-
