What Causes A Heart Attack?

A Heart Attack occurs when the blood flow from the heart is interrupted. Without the constant supply of blood, the tissue in the heart becomes permanently damaged.

The main cause of an attack is coronary heart disease as this causes blockages in the arteries due to a build-up of cholesterol. The accumulation of these deposits are called plaques. If a plaque bursts it causes a blood clot at the site which can prevent the flow of blood to the heart and therefore cause a heart attack.

Lifestyle factors strongly influence the chance of a Heart Attack. Just some of the things that cause an increased risk:

  • Smoking
  • Poor diet that is high in fat
  • Being overweight
  • Not staying fit and active
  • Consuming excessive levels of alcohol

Some health conditions also increase the level of risk.

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Poorly managed High Blood Pressure

Heart Attack Treatment

Treatment options vary with the severity of the heart attack. Emergency widening of the coronary artery can be done by a coronary angioplasty, this procedure allows a stent (a flexible metal mesh) to be fitted to help keep the artery open. If this type of surgery isn’t an option a coronary artery bypass graft can be an option where a blood vessel from elsewhere in the body can be used as a graft.

Medication may be prescribed to break down blood clots. Also, blood thinning medication is often prescribed to avoid future clots occurring.

After A Heart Attack

If the Heart Attack was mild it is possible to experience no further complications, others who have suffered a major attack can have continued problems such as arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) due to the heart muscle being damaged. These can sometimes be controlled by medication, or may require a pacemaker to be fitted to regulate the heartbeat.

Staying well post Heart Attack means making lifestyle changes such as…

  • Eating well
  • Being active
  • Keeping weight down
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Reducing alcohol intak

Long term medication is required, some typical types are…

  • ACE inhibitors to lower blood pressure
  • Anti-platelets to alter the consistency of the blood
  • Beta-blockers to relax the heart muscle
  • Statins to lower cholesterol
