Case Studies

Make sure you are fully covered for your travels. Below are some real examples of clients helped by their Travel Insurance (case studies kindly supplied by Citybond)

Mrs B - Mallorca, Spain

Mrs B was a 64 year old lady enjoying a Mediterranean cruise with her daughter when she slipped on deck and fractured her hip. The assistance company arranged for her to disembark in Palma, Mallorca, where she was admitted to a private hospital.

She preferred not to have the surgery abroad, so after spending 5 days in hospital, she was flown back home to Birmingham by air ambulance and transferred to her preferred hospital to continue her treatment.

The insurers paid out over £18,000 but it only cost the customer the premium and the excess.

Mr H - Florida, USA

Mr H was on holiday in Florida when he suffered a heart attack and was rushed into hospital. He was there for 2 weeks.

He was not well enough to return as a normal seated passenger so the insurers arranged a stretcher repatriation, with a nurse and a doctor to escort him back to hospital in the UK.

The insurers paid out over £46,000, but it only cost the customer the premium and the excess.

Mr R - Moutiers, France

Mr R went on a skiing holiday in Moutiers resort when he fell and chipped his vertebrae whilst skiing on New Year's Day.

He was admitted to a state hospital, and used his EHIC to pay some of the bills. Luckily, he did not need surgery, but was fitted with a lumbar brace, so he needed to come home by stretcher. The assistance company arranged stretcher repatriation with a nurse escort from Geneva to Heathrow.

They even brought Mr R a toothbrush & toothpaste at his request.

The insurers paid out over £5,100 but it only cost the customer the premium and the excess.

Mrs K- Tokyo, Japan

Mrs K was 31 weeks' pregnant when she flew to Japan. Although she had been diagnosed with a low lying placenta her midwife confirmed she was fit to travel.

Unfortunately, as soon as she arrived in Tokyo she went into early labour and was rushed to hospital.

Happily, the baby was delivered safely and they both made a full recovery. However, because the baby was born prematurely he spent a long time in hospital, and it was 3 months before they were both able to fly home.

The insurers paid out over £310,000 but it only cost the customer the premium and the excess.
